What Happened to the V-Berth?

On our previous episode…

You may have noticed a couple of projects that were ‘stricken from the record’ on the Projects/Upgrades post. Here’s a story of bad experiences turning out well…

January 2021: We had the v-berth renovation finalized. New walls installed, fresh paint, new lighting, new moisture-fighting dri-core base layer laid, leak fixed. Now we just needed to call and have our custom mattress delivered. We had ordered the mattress in August 2020 and opted to have the company come and do the measurements. (All boat measurements for templates are tricky, but especially so for v-berths.) I was very excited at the thought of a really comfortable sleeping area on board. The settee sucks, and the Florida apartment mattress of 2020 sucked as well. I was READY for a good night’s sleep in our reno’ed v-berth. Moment of truth: the company comes with our fancy new mattress and…IT DIDN’T FIT!! WTF?? If I wanted mistakes, I would have done it myself! We offered to take the shitty mattress for a substantial discount. Still, the mattress company wasn’t having it—upside: dodged a $2000 bullet.

When we started moving aboard at the end of January, we were still working with the plan of a v-berth bedroom, aft cabin storage. However, once all the bins were on board, the weight distribution did NOT work. Since we do not have a lot of under-deck storage space in the v-berth, there weren’t many choices for balancing the weight. That is why it was a blessing that the v-berth mattress didn’t fit. We could reverse our plans and make the v-berth into storage and the aft cabin back into a bedroom. Best of all, the mattress to be named later can be a regular full size. Score!

However, the aft cabin had been demo’ed early on in 2020 lockdown. When it was dismantled was when it was decided that it would be storage. Now it needed new walls and a ceiling! Enter our friend, Ernst, from SV Blue Moon in Halifax Harbor. He worked with David to get the walls and ceiling up. German engineering at its finest. We painted the walls, bought a mattress, made the bed, unpacked some clothes and opened up a LOT of storage space!

While all this was happening, we were also waiting for the estimates for our insurance company after our wake ‘incident’, which has since been resolved. #boatlife
