New York

We got to Port Washington, NY on June 12, 2022. Port Washington is a cruiser’s dream! Water Taxi, 2(!!!!) dinghy docks, supermarket, laundry, West Marine, restaurants, farmers’ market, and just an awesome neighborhood/community vibe. If we ever moved back to NY (and I had lots of $$$), I’d pick Port Washington.

My new doctor is VERY thorough!

A NY visit means seeing our people and seeing our doctors. Scheduling commenced and we saw everyone we needed to.

Did a few day sails, had some visitors come hang out on boatie, drove around hitting all of our favorite spots and making new ones. You know, the usual.

We anchored in Lloyd Harbor for the 4th, had some guests, got propositioned by a neighboring catamaran. Very flattering!

I got to go upstate to the Finger Lakes to have a Posse 50th celebration. It was a nice change to be in the mountains after being on the water for so long. It has been ages since I’ve visited Lake George and Ithaca was a great reminder of how much I love upstate.

Again!

David had some issues and another heart attack. Fortunate we were to be down the block from St. Francis.

A few more doctor visits, an impromptu Saturday visit with the Edwards family across the Sound. So much fun and I love how spontaneous it was.

New England

At the end of August, we headed across to Connecticut and started bouncing around that side of the Sound. We hit Milford, Niantic, and the holy grail of Newport.

We’ve been to Newport before, but it was great to be on the water vs. driving around town. Grabbed a mooring and proceeded into town to check things out. Had awesome sandwiches at Scratch Kitchen & Catering, bought some lemonade and cheesy poofs from the cutest vendor, Miss Hazel May (IG: #misshazelmay).

We left Newport at the end of August to slowly meander our way south.

One last stop at Port Washington for provisions and prep for Hell Gate. Made it through the city to Gravesend with no issues but an awesome lightning show!

Jerz

Left Gravesend and anchored in Barnegat, NJ on September 5. Weather had us cooling our heels there for a WEEK! We didn’t get to AC until the 12th! Our time in Barnegat was fun though, because we met 3 boatie couples. Two were from the neighborhood and had boats in the marinas. They were doing their sunset dinghy rides. They were very generous! One couple took our garbage and the other invited us to use their outside shower and then hang out. Another cruising couple was anchored with us and we met up with them and had dinner in AC.

We anchored in Lewes, DE as usual. We were leaving the next morning based on a favorable weather forecast but that did not work out. We turned back, anchored, and took naps with the intention of doing our first night run. We left at 8 PM and all the stars aligned. We had wind, weather, and current all in our favor! It was a great first overnight run, even with running alongside ginormous cargo ships. We cruised into Chesapeake City, Delaware in the early morning. The anchorage is not very big and it was crowded, but luckily 3 people were leaving all at the same time, so we were able to have some space to anchor and get some rest.

Annapolis

We hit Annapolis after that. There were no moorings so we went to our fallback anchorage next to the Naval Academy Bridge. We met another cruising couple, I got to see my friend, we grabbed some provisions (wine and Chinese dumplings are most definitely sailing necessities!) and the next day we were able to grab a mooring in town for a couple of days.

I needed the time to gather my courage for our first 24+ hour run. We decided to do the run from Annapolis straight to Norfolk/Portsmouth in one shot. We had a good weather window and all went well. Phew! We anchored in Scott Creek, met my college friend for dinner, and he was nice enough to take us to the grocery store.

From Norfolk we hit Coinjock, docking about 15 minutes before some serious weather blew through. We had to hang there a few days before we headed out. Our Albemarle crossing was fantastic compared to last year. Calm, gentle, had the genoa out, cruising around 7 knots. Lovely.

We anchored our way south to Oriental and welcomed autumn with Hurricane Ian.
