How We Spent Our Summer (2021)

by the Crew of SV Tocino

We meandered north, hitting all our favorite stops.

Georgetown, SC

Osprey Marina (our storage unit is only 6 miles away from the marina, so we were able to lighten our load.)

Carolina Beach Municipal Mooring – Larry the Dockmaster was great!

We spent 2 weeks or so in Oriental, NC at Whittaker Pointe Marina. It was a great stop. AWESOME bathrooms. I even got another client for my fledgling virtual assistant business, Beacon Management Solutions (https://beaconmanagementsolutions.com). Awww yeah! We left and moseyed to Coinjock because we had to stay there at least once from the water side (they were nice enough to let us stay in the parking lot during the great camper van adventure of 2017-2018).

Ran through Norfolk (sorry I didn’t get to see any of my school peeps – maybe next trip up!)

Had an amazing lightning show on the Chesapeake.

Had great anchorages in Lewes, DE, Cape May, and Atlantic City.

Made it to Gravesend Anchorage by the Verrazano bridge to time the run through Hell Gate. (I’m coming home, bitches!)

Made it to our summer mooring at Willis Marine in Huntington and proceeded to start visiting all our peeps. We got to meet our new grandson, Cole. We got to ride out some hurricanes (thank you, Luftigs!!), I got a job at the Annapolis Boat Show in October, and generally hit all our old favorite haunts. We stayed until Labor Day weekend, sailed(ish) to Port Jeff, sailed across to Connecticut and then anchored at Fort Totten (Little Bay anchorage) (Get some Asiago Flats from the Bagel Club in the Baybridge shops) in my old ‘hood to prep again for the Hell Gate run. We made it to Coney Island Creek after going through some rather ‘sporty’ conditions. Weather kept us in Coney Island Creek for 6 DAYS!!! Not the best anchorage, but not the worst, either. Our trip from Coney Island to Barnegat Light was amazing! We saw a whale and a superpod of dolphins. It NEVER gets old!

Barnegat was only supposed to be one night (9.15.21), but the conditions were seriously against us when we left, so we turned back around after making about zero headway and reanchored. Got to AC the next day and stayed until 9.19 due to weather.

Now, we were on a schedule, which is the worst when you’re sailing. I needed to be in Annapolis for orientation on October 1. We had time, but you never know, #weather. So, we kind of just kept on keeping on. We did spend a couple of nights in the Chesapeake City anchorage. The town is cute and we dinghied across to Schaefer’s Canal House for lunch. The awesome folks there gave us free ice! SCORE!

We made it to Annapolis with almost a week to spare (of course) and anchored in the Naval Academy Bridge anchorage. It is a great spot, because the Annapolis South anchorage is way too busy and rocky-rolly, especially on a Saturday. We would dinghy into town, I got to see some of my Posse, had some client Zoom meetings at Starbucks, met with some other cruisers, all while waiting to take our free mooring (show employee perk!) in Spa Creek.

It was a GREAT summer…
